- Subject: No justification given
1 Oct 2001An exchange about justifying violence as a response to terrorism.
Todd,
I never said nor would say that terrorism or violence of any kind is justified, but I do say the sanction and justification of it comes from an historical and politicial base from those who support it. That is different than saying I support it in any way. Whether you call violence terrorism, fanaticism, revolution or freedom fighting, it has to find sanction and sanctuary to continue, and it does so inside nations or groups with a long history of abuse and oppression, who in hopelessness and despair turn to that as a desperate solution. Of course, like all violence, it is wrong and a dead end. As will be any military retaliation to it. If hope and justice are restored in a society then the support drops away, and the IRA is a good example of that right now.
Violence has terrible costs for all involved in it, and people know that. They suffer abuse for a long time before even countenancing support for such a response. That is not to say that the faction who carry it out are the most abused, often they are not. The American revolution had the support of many people, but was led by the landed gentry and well to do for the most part, who felt they had more to lose.
We do not yet know if Osama bin Laden was the culprit, or even if the people named by the FBI are truly the ones responsible for this crime against humanity. I called for an open and fair investigation by an international tribunal, but I never said it was anything less than a heinous crime of mass murder, no matter what "rationale" was given to it by the perpetrators. Replicating the crime is not the answer, nor is war. Hope that makes this more clear for you, you seriously misread me.
John JudgeJohn:
Holding those accountable for an act of war is quite a ways from "replicating the crime" that consisted of unprovoked, horrific attacks on innocent men and women of a sovereign nation. Unfortunately, the world isn't this logical place folks of your political beliefs apparently believe it is. As such, sometimes evil men are, well, just evil men. And, they must be given the requisite treatment, lest we suffer more of the same indignities.
ToddTodd,
The Nazis surely must have qualified as "evil men" in your view, yet we rose above their barbarism with the Nuremberg trials replacing revenge and retaliation that many longed for with measured justice and "stayed the hand of vengeance". What is replicated in a military response is more innocent victims, especially with an undefined enemy.
In WWI the "collateral damage" of non-combatants was about 4%. By WWII it was up to 25-40%. In Vietnam it was closer to 90%. It has to do with the technology of modern warfare and the terms. If you want to set America apart from the "evil people" you despise, then rise above their level and use a rule of law not a rule of force. I know there are many countries and people around the world, as well as native to our own shores, who would make an argument that Americans have been "evil" as well. This does nothing to justify any violence in return, nor should this event do the same. War and violence are a dead end in human history, especially now when we have the wealth and technology to make global justice equal global peace.

11 Oct 2001Here's someone who is starting to get at the two main questions. Who really conducted the attack? What is the real agenda behind the so-called response. He doesn't get everything right, but he's on the right track. I suggest right away that you find and purchase Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia by Ahmed Rasheed, Yale University Press, out in paper now. Written last year it deconstructs the Taliban, the CIA role, the drug role, the significance of the pipelines from the Caspian Sea deposits, and more, including Osama bin Laden in context of being a Saudi Arabian. We have William Casey to thank for much of what we are living through right now, but we can't blame it on Afghanistan or bin Laden.
The So-Called Evidence Is a Farce
by Stan Goff, Narco News, 10 Oct 2001
http://www.narconews.com/goff1.html- Subject: Analysis and Education
12 Oct 2001Friends,
I am working with the Washington Peace Center and want to develop some panels of meta-level analysis on September 11 and the fallout so far and beyond. We have a lot of bright people in DC who can analyze pieces of this well. We need to bring them together for the activist community in panels, classes and maybe a weekly radio show. We might consider some folks out of town if we can raise funds for that, so keep that in mind. The Peace Center is working on all that. I would like COWG to co-sponsor the panels if that makes sense to you. But I need your help, now.
I want you to think of people, including yourselves, who can address aspects of this total paradigm shift we are in as well as the reality that is happening beneath the propaganda veil. I think there are three levels to speak to:
- The events and aftermath of September 11 in terms of the American psyche, politic, federalization, etc. This needs to be put into context in many ways (military, civil rights, covert operation, etc.). The propaganda and limiting of information. The new secret state and war. Homeland security and the clampdown on civil liberties. FEMA and DoD running the country. "Terrorism" and its real meaning and true sponsors. Who really carried this out? Is bin Laden false sponsorship? What is the historical context in terms of what was happening just before this (global economic slump, Kissinger on trial, Bush in trouble, etc.) and how we got to this point as well. Internationally, what is going on? What is the meaning of this new global security alignment? Are we entering the Third World War (war against the Third World)? What would rule of law or global justice mean instead? What are the paths ahead right now? Other contexts perhaps as well, like militarization and budget for CIA/Star Wars, and cuts in social services for instance. What will this mean for the economy if it goes on for 10 years? What are we being asked to fight for really? What is the role of oil, opium, cocaine in all this? Is this blowback or continued operations? Was this a stand down like Pearl Harbor or a put up?
- The second level is who will this affect, who has it affected already and how. Victims and families. Detainees. Islams and Arabs and other people of color. Other nations and nationalities here and abroad. Who will be called a "terrorist". Who has lost jobs or been put out of business, and who will get paid off (corporations or workers)? People in Afghanistan and neighboring countries. Palestinians and Israelis. Colombia, the next Vietnam and that region. These are where official "terrorist" organizations are located now. Next generation and possible conscription. The poor abroad and here. Pockets of resistance, like the Afghani freedom fighters. Americans who will lose civil liberties (posse commitatus, writ of habeus, privacy, etc.). Office of Homeland Security and the fear and victmization it will create. Political groups to the left of center. Local politics as opposed to national. Reporters unable to access information. Federal employees and loyalty issues. Congress and what remains of their powers. Who will be affected by the 500 legal changes that come with declared national emergency and war? Troops, GIs, reservists and their families. Families that do not want revenge. Pockets of international resistance, like the Zapatistas. Anti-Globalist movements. The emerging peace movement.
- Third, what is the appropriate response, and what are the reasonable alternatives. What is wrong with the military responses? What of rule of law, aid to bring people out of despair, global justice, and a realignment of priorities for building a sane world. What are the choices ahead, what are the winning strategies and messages.
I am sure you can think of more topics. The point is we need analysis and self-education to be able to make the most of this crossroads opportunity and challenge. I want to put the best minds out there, DC as well as elsewhere. Please help me think of who to ask and if you can help me organize these events. If you think of someone, including yourself, please send the following information:
- Name and contact information (this is crucial, phone, email)
- Topic(s) they might address
- Whether you know them to ask them to participate
Thanks so much,
John Judgeps - We plan to follow this level with a much more decentralized campaign called "In Our Name" which will facilitate informed, open democratic discussion and debate of how we got here and where we want to go, including alternatives, at the school, church, neighborhood, community hall level, smaller the better. This will both educate and empower people to choose what is being done in their names.
pps - If you want to work on the campaign with us, there is a volunteer meeting scheduled for October 18 at 7:30 pm, call the Peace Center for the location or check it at www.washingtonpeacecenter.org. You can also see my article there, "A New War or A New World?"

Vice President Dick Cheney, in an interview on PBS' "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," noted that the terrorist manuals associated with Osama bin Laden instruct his followers on "how to deploy these kinds of substances." "When you start to piece it all together, and again we haven't finished the investigation and maybe it is coincidence, but I must say I'm a skeptic," Cheney said. 14 Oct 2001Dave,
I noted before that when the transparent false sponsor falls then Iraq and other nations would be the next layer of false sponsors. This is the dark period, unless we choose the other path now! The longer we wait, the less room we will have, the harder it will be, the more grief we will carry.
There is no "logic" to war, only one lie after another. We are asked to support the Blitzkrieg now. The troops are wearing the exact same uniform. I saw the recruiting postcard with that uniform just before this happened and it spooked me. I sat at a restaurant and tried to explain its meaning to someone. I am surrounded by people who only have the vaguest understanding of what is happening. The socialists are very reactionary and seek to discredit the application of critical thinking. "Blame America at your Peril" reads the Newsweek piece.
On the other hand, ordinary Americans can be reached and turned, but we have to establish democracy now. Real democracy. I am listening to my tape from LA five years ago today "Are You Scared Yet?" and it resonates so strongly. I feel almost cursed to have this vision I have and comprehension, it comes on me like a wave at times. And I feel so terribly isolated most of the time Dave. Still here in this empty house doing this without real emotional support day to day. I get angry, I weep, I am overwhelmed at what I know must be done and how to get allies to do it.
And yes, the deaths from this [Afghani] refugee population already created, which will starve come winter and is dying already, will far outstrip the American casualties. Our Iraq policies already have long ago. We are the Nazis, worldwide. This is the turn to genocide, the war between the Information Age and the Industrial Age, between the poor and the global corporations, between the rich here and the people.
Yet, we are kept completely in the dark now. The press is starting to freak out even. The choice is before us, New War or New World. No other choices left. I could help people understand it if I could just get a forum. I began to speak on it just briefly at the end of a local meeting of activists and the facilitator cut me off saying "you can't make a speech"!

US Indicates New Military Partnership With Uzbekistan
Hints of Defense Pact Could Rebalance Power Across Central Asia
(excerpted)
"Mr. Karimov [Ubek's Pres] has emerged as a crucial ally of the US. . . . A hardliner who's stifled dissent, driven political rivals into exile and locked up thousands of Islamic activists, Karimov is not threatened by the kind of bloody domestic protests seen in other Muslim countries . . . after the Soviet breakup, Uzbekistan is far more strategically important. . . .
Uzbek has half the population of Central Asia's 5 former Soviet republics and by far the largest and most capable standing Army. In addition, Kamirov at times has been willing to challenge Russia's dominance of the region . . . (a former Soviet airforce pilot and now a military commentator said, `we will end up as the battleground for a new struggle for influence between Russia and the US') . . .
The unprecedented Oct 7 agreement with the US, negotiated by officials who accompanied Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to Uzbek, all but removes any impression that the US military presence in the region will be short-lived. . . .
Central Asia has the largest oil field found anywhere in the past three decades, and, the US has spent six years struggling with Russia to make the entire Caspian Sea region a Western energy preserve. Strong US interest in the region began in 1995, when the Clinton Administration launched a scheme to transform Central Asia and the Caucasus into a pro-Western swath of territory separating Russia and Iran. The policy centers on the proposed construction of a 1,100-mile-oil-export pipeline from the Caspian to Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Moscow opposes the pipeline because it would lose regional leverage. . . .
In the past two weeks, though, the pipeline's prospects improved when Western oilmen drilling off Kazakstan's Caspian coast found the most convincing evidence yet of the largest oil field in the world since 1967 discovery of oil on Alaska's north slope. Italy's ENI SpA, which operates the field, called Kashagan, says it won't release official results of a third test well for at least 2 weeks . . ."

This war is not response; September 11 is pretext. We still do not know who is responsible, but we will soon be told it is Iraq and Colombia is not far behind.
We are the German people in 1939, Poland has been invaded, WWII and the Holocaust loom, we have to decide. It's our country, our military, our foreign policy, and we will suffer all the consequences of a war Cheney says "may never end". It is being done in our name. C-Span, Wall St Journal, Carlyle
e-mail message by listener to this broadcast.
After so many calls, C-Span brought in the fellow who wrote the initial article in the Wall St. Journal regarding Bin Laden, Bush, Carlyle. Daniel Golden is his name. He was on C-Span's early morning call-in show for an hour. He didn't say a lot more than his article, however, numerous callers did offer more info and further reading, including books about BCCI for background connections. The calls were divided, roughly, I'd say, between those who thought what Golden had done/was doing is treasonous, horrible, etc., to those who, as I indicated, telephoned from around the globe, not just in the States, indicating all the info available on the internet but not being discussed in the mainstream media.
Apparently, the journalist, Golden, himself, has only been at the Journal for two years and was previously with the Boston Globe. This area of interest is not his speciality. He somehow stumbled upon this story in some sort of research. He couldn't answer alot of callers because, as he said, he simply didn't have a whole lot more info. However, he did say he's working on more leads, trying to follow up, altho he didn't specify which/what leads.
Also, C-Span had invited someone from Carlyle to come to their offices when Golden was present, but, as C-Span host said, so far, there's been no reply.
So, keep up the good work, folks! We're making inroads. If you want to reach Golden his e-mail address is: "dan.golden@wsj.com" Hope I got that right -- they said it only once on the show. It's not unusual to have a newcomer at such a paper who is not familiar with the subject matter print the best stories. Let's see how long he'll continue in these matters. He's open to suggestion, as he indicated, this is all new material to him!
One more point, I almost forgot. He was asked by someone how difficult it is to get this material since Carlyle is not a public company. As we all know, which he affirmed, it isn't easy. Of course, he's got more resources at his disposal than you or I. So, if it isn't easy for him, it certainly isn't easier for us. Oh, yes, someone else called in and mentioned the Bath connection with Bush. Golden said he didn't know about it personally, but, that there are/were now other folks digging deeper into the story as well.- Subject: Washington Plots, Moscow Crawls, Kabul Burns
22 Oct 2001There is enough ammunition here to sink the ship!
e-mail message commenting on the "Washington Plots, Moscow Crawls, Kabul Burns" article referenced below:
It's true, as said below, the "bigger" picture is complete neutralization of Russia on all levels, a policy that's been in existence in varying degrees since the turn of the last century. The question, however, in this immediate situation of whodunit, how, why -- means, motive, opportunities, prior knowledge, economic benefits -- is not mutually exclusive to the same questions posed for the bigger, or, biggest picture.
Washington Plots, Moscow Crawls, Kabul Burns
"They" needed a cover story for their military anschluss. Could "they" possibly get up and say, we're going to bomb the hell out of Afghanistan in order to dominate Russia, maintain and increase our military hegemony globally, dominate the world for our own economic benefit (and who is our, in this instance?), give guaranteed income and state-sponsored welfare benefits to our military contractors, oil-related industries and other friendly supranational, international companies, funds, conglomerates, destabilize the Caspian Sea region, and the area known as the Mideast.
They tried that briefly, recall. The amorphous "rogue states" from whom we were supposedly threatened. That didn't seem to convince many people, either at home or abroad. So . . . voila! Some big time terrorism at home!
But there are fissures within the "establishment," too. Personally, I don't think it's a coincidence that the "anthrax" scare was directed at members of the media and the Congress. I think that is/was a clear warning to them, a threat, as to what they can and will do, the absolute power they're in the process of creating.
It isn't just Russia that's the "bigger picture." It's us, too. It's part and parcel of the "bigger plan." Once in power, at this point, they're going for broke. And, it's a very dangerous, destabilizing game plan, worrying to some folks, as well, in the "establishment." Which is why we must expose the cover story. We can't get all the answers ourselves--but, we must poke holes in it as much as possible and demand further investigations, inquiries into all these leads, contradictions, questions. Once/if, the cover story is in doubt, then the house of cards comes crumbling down.

23 Oct 2001A "friend of Congressman Larry McDonald" revives the old John Birch/American Opinion canard that the KAL 007 passengers "landed safe" and were captured and dragged into the Soviet Gulag. This is to show how we are currently being lied to about this war from the far right. This is the same Gary North who wrote up the puzzle piece about the passenger lists, I subscribed to his newsletter to see who he was. I unsubscribed, but thought you might find this an interesting example of disinformation conspiracies. Who knows, maybe Larry McDonald will be traded for bin Laden?

23 Oct 2001War will not end "in our lifetime" says Cheney. Some of this article is disingenuous. Woodward is an old hand at ONI and a CIA asset at the Post. It is not "unprecedented" for CIA and Pentagon to collaborate at all, in fact they always had to (see Fletcher Prouty's exposition in Understanding Special Operations). And the CIA has not suddenly been "unleashed" to do dirty work, it always has as well. The details here are very interesting, though. The picture of Bush, Tenet and Rice in casual dress planning the "American strategy" at Camp David, with Bush holding the video communications clicker is especially chilling.

23 Oct 2001Thomas Ricks wrote the article on August 21st about the debate going on between the now partially replaced Joint Chiefs of Staff and the White House about whether to admit we are an empire and go to Pax Americana. The Pentagon was and still is apparently balking at the latter. This is interesting information on the ongoing internal debate.

25 Oct 2001This makes clear that the bombing campaign may not stop in time to avert "a minimum of a million" deaths from starvation during November predicted by the aid agencies. In addition, it creates both a scare and a cover story for poisoning the food being dropped. How could our intelligence know of such a plan, if one even existed, for internal actions when they could not discover plans for September 11. To me, this is the looking glass of disinformation, providing a way for us to kill Afghanis and when they respond we can blame them instead. Pardon my cynicism.

Conscientious Objector
Edna St. Vincent Millay
I shall die, but that is all I shall do for Death.I hear him leading his horse out of the stall; I hear the
clatter on the barn door.
He is in haste; he has business in Cuba, business in the
Balkans, many calls to make this morning.
But I will not hold the bridle while he cinches the girth.
And he may mount by himself: I will not give him a leg up.Though he flick my shoulders with his whip, I will not tell
him which way the fox ran.
With his hoof on my nrest, I will not tell him where the
black boy hides in the swamp.
I shall die, but that is all I shall do for Death; I am not
on his payroll.I will not tell him the whereabouts of my friends nor of my
enemies either.
Though he promise me much, I will not map him the route to
any man's door.
Am I a spy in the land of the living, that I should deliver
men to Death?
Brother, the password and the plans of our city are safe with
me; never through me
Shall you be overcome.- Subject: `clearly losing the hearts and mind issue'

--> JJ's comments (1st paragraph) to friend's mail (2nd paragraph):
Just needs a little PR tweaking I'm sure, and while we're at it let's find some spinner to reach the Afghanis and the Islamic world and sell them our wonderful America.
- So their war's image needs massaging . . . I hate to sound like we've been there done that -- remember Vietnam, Iran-Contra, et al.? Rendon will be able to make us all forget them. If they were able to make the Iraqi National Congress appear legitimate, they can do anything. At least it's encouraging to learn that the DoD needs help in this sphere.
