MEDIA ADVISORY: Washington Briefings on 9/11 Events

WASHINGTON -- Federal Aviation Administration air traffic managers from Washington Headquarters and the Air Traffic Control System Command Center in Herndon, Va. will brief the news media Monday, August 12, about the September 11, 2001 shutdown of the national airspace. There will be two briefings. The morning one is intended for electronic media; the afternoon session for print media.

Where: System Command Center, Herndon, VA.
When: 10:30 a.m. Crews may shoot b-roll and still photos in the facility beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Where: FAA Headquarters, 800 Independence Ave. SW, Washington DC, Room 9 AB
When: 2 p.m.

This is the only availability the FAA will offer to interview air traffic managers and shoot in the System Command Center before September 11, 2002.

The managers will describe how the FAA responded on September 11, 2001 to safely land or divert more than 4,500 aircraft in less than three hours. The FAA will provide: B-roll of controllers at the Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center in Leesburg, Va., a CD showing the shutdown of the national airspace system, and a chronology of events last September 11.

These briefings are for accredited news media only. Those planning to attend the morning session at the Command Center must call the number above with the names and affiliations of all attendees to gain access to the secure facility. Individuals who are not U. S. citizens require special clearance to visit ATC facilities. Only those who have been pre-cleared may enter the Command Center.
