MARTA GETS BOOST
August 3, 2000
Washington - Representative Cynthia A. McKinney (D-GA),
is pleased to announce the award of a grant to the Metropolitan
Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) from the US Department of
Transportation worth over forty-four million dollars.
The award would allow MARTA to continue its extension of the existing
North Line from Dunwoody Station through the new Sandy Springs Station
and to the new North Springs Station. This grant will also allow
MARTA to purchase fifty-six new cars to provide even more much needed
service to customers.
"I am very grateful to Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater
for helping us to provide the Fourth Congressional District with
a means of alternative transportation," said McKinney. "We are one
of the fastest growing and most productive areas of the nation and
our transportation needs reflect that everyday. This grant will
be of great help in meeting those needs," she concluded.
The North Line Extension Project will provide efficient, economical,
high-speed mass transit facilities, and services to the fastest
growing portion of the Metro Atlanta area and the Perimeter Mall/GA
400 corridor.
The benefits will include savings in travel time, reduced traffic
congestion, and improved air quality by diverting trips from the
usage of automobiles to mass transit.
