Statement of Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney
July 24, 2000
July 24, 2000
I have an announcement to make regarding my name being considered
for an appointment to the U.S. Senate by Governor Roy Barnes.
It has been a sad time since the death of Senator Paul Coverdell.
And the sadness has been compounded by the untimely necessity of
considering whether or not to seek his now vacant Senate seat.
I have discussed this with my friend Governor Roy Barnes. I have
considered the impact this decision would have on my family, especially
my 14-year old son Coy, and upon the people of the Fourth Congressional
District who have invested their trust, faith and confidence in
me.
At this time in my life, this comes down to a series of choices
- between soccer games and political fundraising - between serving
the people of the Fourth Congressional District and asking them
to help me serve the whole state of Georgia.
Early this morning, I spoke with Governor Barnes and I have withdrawn
my name from consideration.
I have chosen soccer games and serving the people of the Fourth
Congressional District.
I believe a race for the U.S. Senate is in my future. But the
time is just not right today.
I trust the good judgment of Governor Barnes and believe he will
appoint a senator who will make us proud.
