When our children’s safety is at steak, we must take action-and
we must all do our part

DECATUR-Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) is pleased to announce
that the DeKalb County School System has been awarded $1,375,000
for the COPs in Schools Program. This grant is awarded through the
United States Department of Justice’s, Office of Community Oriented
Policing Services.
Community Policing Officers typically perform a variety of functions
within the school. These functions include teaching crime prevention,
substance-abuse courses, and monitoring at risk students in order
to increase respect for law enforcement among students. Resource
officers have the responsibility of combining the functions of law
enforcement and education. "Community policing is a crime fighting
strategy that encourages law enforcement to work in partnership
with the community to solve crime problems," stated McKinney.
