McKinney Opposes One-Sided Middle East Resolution

May 2, 2002

White House, State Department say resolution undermines U.S. peace efforts

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney today issued the following statement on House Resolution 392 on the Middle East conflict.

"I strongly abhor the targeting of Israeli civilians. While I support a safe and secure Israel, I also share the concerns of millions of Americans that Palestinians too deserve to live in freedom, dignity, and security.

"Today's resolution is likely to undermine America's vital role as peacemaker. That is why the White House only reluctantly gave the green light for Senate consideration of another version. Secretary of State Colin Powell has warned the Congress against 'any action that can affect ongoing discussion in the Mideast.' Because, as he points out, 'passions are very inflamed over there. It's a sensitive and delicate time and there are a lot of nuances.'

Congresswoman McKinney continued, "The Congress should look for ways to contribute constructively to peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The United States must be an honest broker for peace in the Middle East."
