McKinney Statement Regarding Unauthorized Letter to the Editor

November 28, 2001

AN OPEN LETTER
November 28, 2001

I am writing to respond to the November 28, 2001, Letter to the Editor from Raeed Tayeh.

First let me say that today I accepted his resignation from my staff.

His Letter to the Editor was not an official statement from my congressional office or me. I was not aware that this letter was being written or that it was sent. He had been on my staff for only two months and he may not have realized that his comments might be perceived to be an official statement.

There are also comments in this letter that do not reflect my thoughts and positions.

I have taken action to make sure my entire staff understands I have no tolerance for unauthorized statements made by members of my staff, especially any statements criticizing Members of Congress.

As an individual everyone has the right to free speech. However, when a staff member speaks as a representative of my office or me they must get authorization. That did not happen and I regret any confusion this may have caused.

Cynthia McKinney
Member of Congress
