Oak Grove Elementary School Receives National Award
May 23, 2001
(DECATUR, GA) Today, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was pleased to announce
that a national panel of educators has selected Oak Grove Elementary School
in DeKalb County to receive the prestigious Blue Ribbon Schools Award. Only
264 elementary schools throughout the country were selected to receive this
award.
Blue Ribbon status is awarded to schools that have strong leadership; a clear
vision and sense of mission that is shared by all connected with the school;
high quality teaching; challenging curriculum; policies and practices that
ensure a safe environment conducive for learning; solid evidence of family
improvement; evidence that the school helps all students achieve high
standards; and a commitment to share these practices with other schools.
"Our young people are expected to compete and win in a global economy. It is
no longer acceptable to compare ourselves with other DeKalb schools, Georgia
schools, or southern schools. Our young people must be prepared to face
global challenges. Oak Grove Elementary has demonstrated that it is
preparing our young people for the world," stated McKinney.
