CONGRESSWOMAN
MCKINNEY ANNOUNCES MILITARY ACADEMY
APPOINTMENTS
March 23, 2000
Decatur - Congresswoman
Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) announced the recipients of her Military
Service Academy Nominations. After sifting through dozens of applications
from local high school seniors, a board of local people chose 6
local students for primary nominations to the Naval Academy, West
Point, and the Air Force Academy. Congresswoman McKinney stated
that "out of a number of highly qualified students who applied for
nomination to the academies, these were truly the cream-of-the-crop.
I am excited about the prospect of people such as these leading
our military in the future.
While each Member of Congress is allowed
5 nominated candidates to attend each academy, existing enrollment
of previous nominees allowed for only 2 nominations per academy
this year. Ms. Charise Taylor, from The Cathedral Academy, and Mr.
Robert Barkers, of Southwest DeKalb High School, received nominations
to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Craig Webster,
from Marist Academy, and Mr. Nick Jeffers, from Pace Academy, received
nominations to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Also, Mr. Robert
Kazmarek, from The Westminster School, and Mr. Brandon McPherson,
from Columbia High School, were recipients of the Congresswoman's
nomination to West Point Academy, West Point, NY.
"I wish the best of luck to these
young adults as they carry on their education. The academies afford
one of the best education's in the nation, and also prepare young
men and women to be outstanding leaders, not only in the military,
but all of society," stated Congresswoman McKinney. High school
juniors who are interested in applying for a military academy should
contact the Congresswoman's Decatur Office at (404) 377-6900 in
midsummer for application information.
