CONGRESSWOMAN CYNTHIA MCKINNEY WANTS RENEWED FUNDING FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH ON AIDS

"If the CPCRA loses funding, over a decade of work will be lost"

February 16, 2000

DECATUR--Nationwide CPCRA funding from the National Institutes of Health ended on December 31, 1999. A long time advocate of HIV and AIDS issues, Congresswoman McKinney stated strongly, "the important work of the Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS must continue. We need to be increasing funding instead of cutting it." There are many important questions in the treatment and care of HIV positive individuals that must be answered. We must continue to educate the underserved HIV population about research and treatment options.

The face of AIDS is changing; minorities, women and injection drug users make up the largest growing population of new HIV infections. Forty eight percent of patients enrolled in CPCRA studies are African-American or Hispanic. The AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta has enrolled 692 patients in CPCRA studies. ARCA enrolls patients through forty five physicians in private practice throughout the metro area and five public health clinics. There is an urgency on this matter and the harmful, negative effects on the community if the program is not refunded. "Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS funding means a great deal to over 20,000 HIV positive people in the Atlanta area." concluded McKinney.
