Human Rights/ International Relations
The protection of dignity and human
rights is an issue that I have fought strongly for
since I've been in Congress. In 2000, I was successful
in having the Arms Trade Code of Conduct passed,
a law that now requires the U.S. to create an international
system for controlling the transfer and supply of
weapons to nations that abuse their human rights.
As the Ranking Member of the International Operations
and Human Rights Subcommittee, I have overseen hearings
on sexual trafficking, refugee crisis, and humanitarian
responses among many hearings on nation- or region-specific
issues, such as Colombia, Rwanda, and East Timor.
