We are also strongly opposed to Chinese nuclear testing at Lop Nor, and N-test by any country. We express our strong desire to protect our land and ocean from the violence of nuclear power, for we live by the bounty of the land nad the ocean which we hold sacred, which are the most precious legacy to the future generations. We fervently hope for a nuclear-free Asia and Pacific NOW. The deplorable decision to resume testing will throw away all the glory, splendor and magnificence that the French and the Chinese people have built over years. What happened to 'Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite'? These words made France and inspired others to follow. We urge the French government to abandon its plan to resume nuclear testing in the Pacific and restore to the Polynesian peoples their inalienable right to self determination. Failure to heed this call will mean political suicide for President Chirac. We likewise urge the Chinese government to halt the nuclear-testing and reconsider the nuclear development policies. We believe that it is a way for China to be respected as the leader of peoples' government. Aware of the dangerous link between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, we commit ourselves to work in solidarity with the peoples and victims struggling against environmental pollution by radiation. By removing the damages caused by the entire process from nuclear fuel mining to the reprocessing of spent fuel, as well as the disposal of radioactive waste. NO TO NUCLEAR TESTING! NO TO NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS! FREEDOM FOR THE POLYNESIAN PEOPLES! STOP THE CONTRUCTION OF NO. 4 POWER PLANT IN TAIWAN! STOP DUMPING RADIOACTIVE WASTES IN ORCHID ISLAND! NO TO NUKES, YES TO LIFE! (signed by delegates from Hongkong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Tahiti, Thailand and Taiwan) PS. The attendance of demonstration was about 30,000 by the TEPU (Taiwan Environmental Protection Union), but estimated by partial Taiwan's media as only about 10,000 persons.
