Humanitarian support to children from Ivankov and Polesie districts of Kiev region living in areas contaminated by radioactive elements as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant
circa 2016

The studies carried out in 2014-2015 by the Professor Yury Bandazhevsky and Associate Professor Nataliya Dubovaya with the help of public health institutions and international organisations showed that a significant number of children from families in Ivankov and Polesie districts chronically living in the territory contaminated by radioactive substances due to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident have considerable health problems. Given the nature of changes in the child’s body, one should anticipate that in the future, as a child grows, these problems may provoke severe diseases ending in death or disability [a collection of scientific articles «Ecology and Health», N° 1, 2, 3].

The situation is worsening due to the lack of appropriate conditions for adequate formation of a child’s body. In particular, due to cancellation of a number of benefits for residents of localities referring to the fourth zone of radioactive contamination in 2015, the provision of food to children in 16 schools (1260 children) in Ivankov district and in 7 schools (594 children) in Polesie district was terminated. Taking into account the economic situation in these districts (the lack of financing sources in the District Administration and separate families), Professor Yury Bandazhevsky representing a non-governmental organization—Coordinating and Analytical Centre “Ecology and Health” created in Ukraine with the support of the European Parliament—asked Massimo Bonfatti, a President of the Italian public organisation “World in Motion”, to assist in providing food to children living in these areas. Thanks to efforts of Massimo Bonfatti, the necessary funds for the provision of hot meals and essential vitamins and minerals during the academic year to all school and pre-school children in Radynka village in Polesie district have been raised in a very short period.

The Coordinating and Analytical Centre “Ecology and Health” encourages citizens, government and nongovernmental organizations around the world to follow the example of the Italian organization “World in Motion” and help the children suffering from the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
