: They claim some type of inherent sovereignty apart from the United States. Unlike many of the 'sovereign' groups, most of the Washitaw people are black I think, not white and they are non-violent (much to their credit). However, they claim to be Indians, the original moundbuilders, and that that 'their' land was taken in the Louisiana purchase. There are a few problems with these claims:

: 1) The moundbuilders were of the Mississippian Culture which, if I am not mistaken, was the precursor of the Muscogees (Creeks).

: 2) The very word 'Washita' can historically be connected with the Choctaws, Wichita & Affiliated Tribes, as well as some Algonkian cultures.

: 3) Their web pages makes references to a pre-Indian presence, but they do not mention pre-Indian culture. Their web pages make vague references to ancient Egyptian language and culture, yet there is no reference to the Coptic church, which preserves the language of ancient Egypt in written and spoken form to this day (I wonder if the Washitaws are even aware of this fact).

: 4) The lands included in the Louisiana Purchase were inhabited by a myriad of Indian tribes, many of whom signed treaties with the United States and still exist today as tribal governments, many of whom are now headquartered in Oklahoma:

: If the washita People want to make any type of land claim, and are seeking a sovereign other than the U.S., the United States has a process by which indigenous groups become federally recognized outlined in Title 25, Part 83 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations. Otherwise, they would be better off doing it by membership or treaty with existing Indian tribes. In my opinion, their claims do a great disservice to the American Indians.
