I reproduce here an article published by CRII_RAD in a French Newspaper
(The Red and
the Green). For those who do not know of them, the CRII_RAD is an independent association of nuclear specialists - among other things, they gave the alert when the Chernobyl radioactive cloud passed over France. Here is their article:
Following the decision from the French president with regard to the
resumption of nuclear tests: the CRII-RAD would like to make the following
points:
Repeated explosions have thus created, in the body of the atoll, enormous accumulations of radioactive waste permeating an immense network of cracks particularly conducive to their dissemination. The question is not one of knowing whether or not the environment is contaminated - the contamination is a scientific fact - but to determine how far the particles (radionuclides) will travel, and how long it will take for them to be incorporated in the food chain, and to reach human beings! We must remember that any absorption of radioactive elements, however weak they may be, produces a risk of cancer to anyone exposed, and a genetic risk for their future children. We also note that all information about the state of health of soldiers and French-Polynesian inhabitants is classified "Top Secret". In any case, nobody can be sure to what degree the atoll is currently contaminated. Contrary to what has been stated, the scientist called in to investigate Mururoa were not free to choose where they investigated. The guidance of the visits by the military authorities must give rise to suspicion as to the state of the zones that were forbidden . In consequence, and in accord with what Chirac has proposed, CRII-RAD is requesting permission, starting tomorrow, to organise a study mission on Mururoa, in association with other independent scientists. The authorisation should clearly stipulate that the military authorities will allow access to all parts of the atoll and proceed to take any measurements or collect any samples that they may judge necessary. The absence of impact on the environment having been given as an element in the Government's decision , it is essential that this sampling be done before the resumption of the tests!
- General interests or private interests? CRII-RAD is asking for the
organization of a general debate!
